A Story For Every Season
My wife and I went into Houston last night to see Jersey Boys! The touring company of the hit Broadway smash hit is at the Hobby Center. The brings to light a lot of the behind the scenes story of how four young men from New Jersey became fabulously successful as The Four Seasons. The initial appeal of the play for us was the music. My wife and I were the right age in the 60's to have a very strong attachment to the music of The Four Season. For a while they had a string of hits that went to number one on the charts.Everyone our age was singing the songs and buying the records. The presentation of the story was interesting, Each of the members of the group told parts of the story from their perspective and, of course, each of them had a bit different perspective on how things developed. The method was very effective and the stories were compelling. The play is a powerful reminder of how difficult it is to reach the top and how high the price is for success, especially in the music industry. The play was also filled with the wonderful music of the group, along with a few other numbers. We were pleased that there were 22 songs in act 1 and another 12 in the second. I was patting my foot and mouthing the words throughout the presentation. If you have a chance to see the play I would recommend it highly. I do need to warn you that the language in the play is not the kind I am used to. Especially in the first half hour as the story was being built I heard more profanity than I have in a long time. It was so fast and furious I was uncomfortable getting through it and I was very glad we had not taken any of our kids with us. I would have been embarrassed sitting next to my forty year old offspring. |
