Leadership and Self-Deception

By Ralph Bryant

As a voracious reader I am always delighted to find out about a new book that someone else has enjoyed. Last week a friend handed me a copy of Leadership and Self-deception, produced by the Arbinger Institute. The subtitle of the book is "getting out of the box". The book was required reading for my friend who works in a university setting.

This book uses a fictional environment to teach some lessons that are intended to help readers improve their effectiveness, by seeing themselves more clearly. The lead character in the story is Tom Callum, who has just been at his new company for a few weeks when he is brought in for a talk with his superior. Tom is a highly motivated and, on the surface, successful leader. But his boss leads him through a learning process that helps Tom to see that he could be a much more effective leader if he were less aware of himself and more aware of those he's trying to lead. In the book the process took two days, but Tom really made a breakthrough and came to understand his self-deception, which had become a major hurdle in his path.

I found this book to be fascinating from the beginning, the story itself was interesting, but the progression of awareness in Tom Callum helps the reader to learn the lessons for himself as well. I strongly recommend this book to those that want to be more selfless leaders, which will open the doors to far more achievement in the long run.
