Unfinished Business--A Shaggy Dog Story
I am reading a book right now called The Curious Life of Sidd Finch, by George Plimpton. In it he makes mention of the fact that Mozart left lots of his compositions unfinished, even though they were masterpieces. That reminded me of a shaggy dog story about the Mozart that you may not have heard, but need to! One day in his research for a paper in one of his classes, a music student thought that he discovered the whereabouts of the unfinished works by Mozart. He believed the endings were buried with the composer! He went to Austria and tried to get the authorities to exhume Mozart's body. They refused, but the young man was not about to stop. One night he went the grave and dug up the coffin. When he opened the lid, expecting to find the musical treasures, Mozart sat up and said, "Leave me alone! I am decomposing!"
